Have you ever noticed that when Jesus raised Lazarus from death to life he was still wrapped up in his graveclothes? Jesus had called down into the depths of death and with a single command had brought Lazarus into living, breathing fullness of new life. “Lazarus, come out!” Jesus commanded and he did. He came shuffling out, still wrapped up in the stench of all that death.
This, to me, is a beautiful picture of our journey from death to new life and the reality that even after we have been made new by Jesus, there is some unravelling to be done. We still carry with us things that bind and stink and remind us of our former life. But those things are not us and there is hope in the unravelling, the shedding and revealing of who we really are in Christ.
This blog is about that.
After Jesus spoke new life into Lazarus he instructed the astonished crowd to “Unbind him, and let him go.” Lazarus’ miracle was celebrated in community as those who had wailed for him now helped him get free of what still bound him.
This is a space for that.
Unravelling in community is a way that we can be astonished by God’s grace and power in our lives. Shedding the graveclothes can seem like a daunting and dirty business, but I believe it can also be an act of worship. As we share this journey together, there will be much to celebrate!
